About Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born in Düsseldorf in 1880. As a child he was frail, suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. Despite this he overcame his physical limitations participating in such activities as diving, boxing, gymnastics, skiing, karate, yoga and meditation.

In 1912 he came to England and worked as a self-defence instructor, boxer and circus performer. At the outbreak of the first World War he was interned as an “enemy alien.”It was at this time he began to develop what he then named Contrology (the beginning of Pilates) which he taught to other prisoners of war. Initially his method consisted of mat work exercises but using his creativity he experimented with bed springs to create resistance for those who were sick or bed bound. (In 1918 an influenza epidemic struck killing thousands of people, but not a single one of his trainees died. This, he claimed, testified the effectiveness of his system). Today these ideas using spring resistance have been refined and you will see them in most Pilates studios, these machines are know as the cadillac and the reformer.

Joseph returned to Germany in 1919 where he worked with Rudolp Laban who introduced him to dance. He was offered a post to train the National Army but his passion was to train and heal so he made his way to the USA where he wrote two books “Your Health and “Return to Life through Contrology” where you will find his thirty four exercises for home practice. He also took on apprentices who took his method forward and began to help him establish what we know today as Pilates.

Today Pilates is a globally acknowledged method of exercise practiced by such prolific names as David Beckham, Andy Murray and Steven Gerard. Also many of the worlds finest dancers and athletes practice Pilates as part of their daily training regime.

Why the STOTT PILATES system is so good!

Would you like to know how Pilates could help you?

It is based around a set of principles. Breathing, Precision, Centering, Control, Concentration and Flow. These principles are designed to train the body and mind and allows you to let unwanted tension release while challenging the body to a complete and rigorous workout. Emphasis is placed on quality rather than quantity and execution and correct control to evenly strengthen all areas of the body rather than weaken others due to unbalanced training sessions.

Pilates can help reduce back pain, perform daily activities with greater ease, increase your exercise or sporting achievements and play vital part of the demanding training regimes of elite dancers and athletes. It is regarded as a safe workout as most of the exercises are performed in a sitting or reclined position so are only partially weight bearing. This gives Pilates the ability to be practiced by everyone whether you are a rehab client an avid exerciser or an elite athlete.

If your seeking strength, flexibility and endurance without risking injury, relieving tension and promoting self confidence while maintaining a balanced and aligned body that not only looks fit, feels revitalised and moves with ease then The Movement Base and STOTT PILATES is for you.

We can help you feel great all day every day.
